How Northern Ireland’s grammar schools use SEAG results

Schools don’t all use SEAG results the same way. This free guide shows what a Band or TSAS actually means at each school, using official SEAG information and each school’s own published admissions criteria — with a source for every figure.

The four ways schools use SEAG results

Every school writes its own admissions criteria, but four patterns cover them. A school’s pattern determines what matters more: the exact score, the Band, the non-academic criteria, or none of these.

1 · Score rank order

Applicants are ranked by exact TSAS, highest first, until places fill. Some schools also use a small “pool” near the last place, where sub-criteria (prep department, siblings, feeder primary school) decide. At these schools the precise score matters.

Examples include: Ballymena Academy (rank order), Methodist College Belfast (Methody) and Victoria College (rank order plus pool).

2 · Band priority

All Band 1 applicants are considered before any Band 2, and so on. Within a Band, every child is equal — places are decided by criteria such as sibling, eldest child, Free School Meals entitlement, feeder primary school, or random selection. Two extra TSAS points change nothing at these schools; the tie-break criteria are what to check.

Examples include: RBAI, St Malachy’s College, St Columb’s College.

3 · Partial academic pathway

Some integrated and all-ability schools admit only a share of their intake (35% at the examples given) by SEAG score. The rest enter through an all-ability pathway with no test at all.

Examples include: Strangford Integrated College and Lagan College.

4 · More places than applicants

Some grammar schools receive fewer applications than they have places. When that happens, the criteria are barely applied — historically, applicants have been admitted across Bands. Published application figures show this; lowest-score tables do not.

Examples include: St Columb’s College (156 applications for 220 places, 2025/26); Ballymena Academy received 190 total-preference applications for 176 places in 2025/26.

Why this page does not calculate admission probabilities. The same result is treated differently at different schools, and criteria, applicant numbers and tie-breaks change each year. A percentage produced from one number would be a guess. This page shows the published evidence instead, so you can see how each school actually allocates places.

What your child’s result means

Your child’s Statement of Outcomes shows both a Band and a TSAS. A school uses one or the other — never both at once. Explore each separately below. Partial-pathway schools and schools with more places than applicants read results differently again: see the four patterns.

At schools that use the Band

At schools that use the exact TSAS

At these schools the exact TSAS is what is ranked; the Band label matters less, and two children in the same Band can be many rank places apart. Some schools (Methodist College, Victoria College) fill their final places from a pool where sub-criteria, not score, decide.

Official The average (mean) SAS for English/Gaeilge and for Maths is 100; the highest possible SAS is 141 and the lowest is 69. The average (mean) TSAS is 200; the highest possible TSAS is 282 and the lowest is 138. Source: SEAG assessment guide.

For context: Methodist College published that for September 2026 entry its 200th ranked place fell on TSAS 211 and its pool spanned 196–210. These figures describe one year’s applicants — they are not thresholds for future years, and each year’s rank depends entirely on who applies.

Band boundaries are set from each year’s cohort, so the same TSAS does not always produce the same Band in different years. SEAG does not publish a fixed score-to-Band conversion.

The criteria each school used for the most recent SEAG cycle, with the source and the date it was checked. Always read a school’s full current criteria before applying.

Full criteria summaries have now been verified for all 63 member schools, based on each school’s own published admissions criteria for September 2026 entry. If you find an error or a criteria change, report it and we will correct the page.

Methodist College Belfast (Methody)Belfast · co-educational voluntary grammar · Pattern: Score rank order + pool

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 240 places. 311 applications were considered for 2026 entry.
  2. The first 200 places went in strict TSAS rank order — the 200th place fell on TSAS 211.
  3. The remaining 40 places came from a pool: the 260th-ranked score was 196 (tied), so 64 children with TSAS 196–210 entered the pool.
  4. Pool places were decided by published sub-criteria; the lowest score accepted ranged from 196 to 206 depending on which sub-criterion applied.
Methody publishes where its final places fell. Most schools do not publish this information. These figures describe one year’s applicants — they are not thresholds for future years.
Worth asking this school: Which pool sub-criterion filled the final places last year? · How large was the pool, and what score range did it span?

Royal Belfast Academical Institution (RBAI)Belfast · boys’ voluntary grammar · Pattern: Band priority

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 150 places. Boys are admitted by Band: all Band 1 before any Band 2, and so on.
  2. Within an oversubscribed Band, priority order is: Inchmarlo (prep) pupils → siblings (past or present) → eldest or only boy → computerised random selection.
  3. Special Circumstances and Special Provision cases are banded on evidence and considered alongside everyone else.
  4. Fees applied: £1,740 (2025/26; 2026/27 to be confirmed), with a means-tested bursary scheme.
Within a Band every boy is equal; the tie-break criteria decide places. The criteria define “sibling” and “eldest boy” precisely — read the definitions before assuming either applies.

Victoria College BelfastBelfast · girls’ voluntary grammar · Pattern: Score rank order + pool

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 135 places. The first 120 go in strict TSAS rank order.
  2. A pool of around 25 next-ranked girls is then formed; remaining places are allocated by sub-criteria: Prep Department pupils → child of the family enrolled or accepted → Child Looked After → child of the family at a single-sex school → ranked feeder primary schools.
  3. Final ties are broken by a name-seeded computer random process.
  4. Preference position is ignored — a 2nd-preference application is treated identically to a 1st.
Applications have exceeded places in each recent year (154 applications for 135 places in 2025/26). The feeder-school ranking used in the pool is published in full in the criteria document.

Ballymena AcademyBallymena · co-educational voluntary grammar (non-denominational) · Pattern: Score rank order

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 176 places. Applications are ranked by exact TSAS, highest first, until places fill.
  2. Identical scores are separated by: preference order → siblings (more siblings first) → eldest or only child → primary school in the former Ballymena Borough area → electronic random selection.
  3. Capital fee £140 per year applies; a voluntary Education Enrichment Fund contribution (suggested £120) is also requested.
In 2025/26 the school received 190 total-preference applications for 176 places. Rank order applies here, but the published figures show moderate pressure in recent years.

St Malachy’s CollegeBelfast · boys’ voluntary grammar · Pattern: Band priority

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 170 places. Boys are admitted by Band: all Band 1 before any Band 2, and so on; Special Circumstances and Special Provision cases are banded on evidence.
  2. Within an oversubscribed Band: siblings of present or past pupils → eldest boy or only child → Child Looked After → Free School Meals entitlement → pupils of around 77 named contributory primary schools → a published randomised alphabet of surnames → oldest first.
  3. Voluntary contribution: £100 per year.
Several criteria operate inside each Band at this school, including Free School Meals entitlement and a published randomised surname order. For any Band, the within-Band criteria decide places once the school is oversubscribed in that Band.

St Columb’s CollegeDerry/Londonderry · boys’ voluntary grammar · Pattern: Band priority · more places than applicants recently

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 220 places — Northern Ireland’s largest grammar intake. Boys are admitted by Band, 1 to 6, then all other applicants.
  2. Within a Band: brothers of pupils → eldest or first boy (with catchment-arrival and other published variants) → children of staff → all others → a published randomised surname alphabet → lot.
  3. Voluntary contribution: £50 per family.
Applications have been below places for three years running (156 applications for 220 places in 2025/26), so the criteria have barely been needed and applicants across Bands were admitted.

Strangford Integrated CollegeCarrowdore · co-educational integrated college · Pattern: Partial academic pathway

School-published Stated from September 2024 onwards

  1. 35% of admissions are selected by SEAG test score (the “Grammar Pathway”).
  2. The remaining places are all-ability: children applying to that pathway do not sit SEAG at all.
  3. A familiarisation day lets children experience the assessment environment beforehand.
Applicants can apply to both pathways. The all-ability pathway does not require the assessment.

Belfast Royal Academy (BRA)Belfast · co-educational voluntary grammar · Pattern: Score rank order

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 200 places. Candidates are admitted in strict rank order of Total Standardised Age Score (TSAS), highest to lowest, up to the admissions number.
  2. If candidates are tied for the last place(s), priority order is: Preparatory Department pupils registered since 1 September 2025 → a sibling currently in the Secondary Department → entitlement to Free School Meals.
  3. If a tie remains: age (eldest to youngest) → a fixed randomised order of surname initial → computerised random selection.
  4. A compulsory capital fee of £140 per year applies; the school also requests a £350 voluntary parental contribution.
Places are decided by SEAG score rank alone — the Band is not used. Special Circumstances and Special Provisions claims are assessed separately and can adjust or award a TSAS.

Rathmore Grammar SchoolBelfast · Catholic co-educational grammar · Pattern: Band priority

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 180 places. Pupils are admitted by Band: all Band 1 applicants are considered before any Band 2, and so on through the Bands until places are filled.
  2. Within each Band the order is: a child of the family currently or previously enrolled → a child of a permanent member of staff → the eldest (or only) child of the family to achieve that Band, Certificate of Verification required → all other applicants.
  3. Within the eldest-child group and the all-other-applicants group, if oversubscribed, applicants are ranked by combined Standardised Age Score (TSAS), highest first, up to the admissions number.
  4. Ties for the last place: entitlement to Free School Meals → a computer-based process using applicants’ names.
  5. No capital fee; a voluntary contribution (currently £120 per year) is requested.
Band comes first: a lower-scoring Band 1 applicant is placed ahead of a higher-scoring Band 2 applicant. The ‘eldest child’ criterion is defined precisely and needs a Certificate of Verification — read the definition before assuming it applies.

Our Lady and St Patrick’s College, KnockBelfast · Catholic co-educational grammar · Pattern: Band priority

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 190 places. Pupils are admitted by Band: all Band 1 applicants (criterion A) before any Band 2 (B), and so on through Bands 3–6 and then Other, until places are filled.
  2. Within an oversubscribed Band the subsidiary criteria are applied in order: a child of the family currently or previously enrolled → the eldest or only child of the family (defined, verification certificate required) → entitlement to Free School Meals → applicants for whom Knock is their nearest Catholic grammar school → highest Total Standardised Age Score (TSAS).
  3. Remaining ties: a fixed randomised order of surname initial → subsequent letters, forenames and date of birth → randomised computer selection.
  4. No capital fee; a voluntary contribution of £150 per family per year is requested.
Band comes first, and the exact TSAS is only used as a late tie-breaker (H5). Several non-academic criteria — including whether Knock is the applicant’s nearest Catholic grammar school — are applied within a Band before score is reached. Check the precise definitions before assuming one applies.

Sullivan Upper SchoolHolywood · controlled co-educational grammar · Pattern: Partial academic pathway

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 150 places. The first 120 are allocated in strict rank order of Total Standardised Age Score (TSAS), highest to lowest.
  2. The remaining 30 places are filled from a pool: the next applicants by score, down to roughly the 165th-highest score (about 45 applicants), are placed in a pool and then ranked not by score but by the criteria below.
  3. Pool order: entitlement to Free School Meals → transferring from Sullivan Upper Preparatory → a sibling currently enrolled → transferring from one of 3 named primary schools → transferring from one of 13 named primary schools → resident in the BT18 (Holywood) postal district.
  4. Remaining ties within the pool: highest TSAS → home nearest the school’s front entrance → a computer-based process using applicants’ names.
  5. A capital fee of £140 per year applies.
Only the top 120 places go on score alone. The final 30 are decided mainly by feeder-primary and residence criteria rather than score, and the pool is capped at roughly the 165th-highest score — so which pool criterion a child meets can matter as much as the mark.

For 2026 entry the school reported 189 applications for 150 places: the 120th score-ranked place fell on a SEAG score of 217, and the pool reached down to a score of 201 (the 165th place), as stated by the school.

  2. The remaining 20 places are filled from a pool: the next 40 applicants by score are placed in a pool and then ranked not by score but by the non-academic criteria below.
  3. Non-academic order: attending the Preparatory Department → a child of the family enrolled → a twin or triplet whose sibling is already admitted → the eldest or only child transferring from a listed feeder primary → other children from a listed feeder primary → entitlement to Free School Meals.
  4. Remaining ties: highest TSAS → a random computer-generated tie-break.
  5. A mandatory capital fee of £140 per year applies (£70 for the third and subsequent child); a voluntary contribution of £80–£500 is invited.
The top 150 places go on score alone; the final 20 are decided from a 40-strong pool by feeder-primary and family criteria rather than score. A child just outside the top 150 needs to meet a pool criterion, not simply hold the next-highest mark.

  1. 140 places (the admissions number was 165 in the years shown below). All applicants’ Total Standardised Age Scores (TSAS) are ranked and grouped into 3-mark ranges; higher groups are admitted before lower groups.
  2. Within the group where places run out, remaining places go by sub-criteria in order: children of Members or Attenders of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) → pupils in the Preparatory Department from 1 September 2025 → a sibling in Years 8–14, including a twin or triplet already admitted → transferring from a contributory primary school (last 5 years) → all other applicants.
  3. Within each sub-criterion, applicants entitled to Free School Meals are given preference; any remaining tie is settled by computerised random selection.
  4. A capital fee of £140 per year applies.
Scores are grouped into 3-mark bands rather than ranked to the exact mark, so within the band where places run out the non-academic criteria — Quaker connection, prep, sibling, feeder primary — decide, not the precise score.

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 130 places. Pupils are admitted by SEAG Band: all Band 1 applicants before any Band 2, and so on through Band 6, until places are filled.
  2. Within an oversubscribed Band the order is: a sibling currently enrolled → the eldest or only child of the family (verification form required) → pupils from one of nine named feeder primary schools → a Child Looked After → entitlement to Free School Meals.
  3. If a final selection is still needed, remaining applicants are ranked by total Standardised Age Score (SAS); any further tie is settled by a computer-based process using applicants’ names.
  4. No tuition or capital fee; a voluntary contribution (currently £130 for the eldest child, £100 for each additional child) is requested.
Band comes first and score is used only at the end: several non-academic criteria — sibling, eldest child, named feeder primaries — are applied within a Band before the SAS decides. Check the definitions before assuming one applies.

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 120 places. The first 110 are allocated in strict rank order of Score (Total Standardised Age Score), highest to lowest.
  2. The remaining 10 places are filled from a Pool of at least 20 girls — those with the three next-highest scores (extended if needed) — ranked not by score alone but by the criteria below.
  3. Pool order: girls in the Preparatory Department as of 1 September 2024 → a child of the family in the Secondary Department → the eldest child of the family → highest Scores → entitlement to Free School Meals.
  4. Final tie-break: the girl whose home is closest to the school by straight-line distance.
  5. A voluntary contribution of £415 per pupil is requested for 2026/27.
Only the top 110 places go on score alone; the final 10 come from a pool of at least 20 girls (the three next-highest scores) decided mainly by prep, sibling and eldest-child criteria — so a mark just below the cut-off is placed in the pool, not admitted automatically.

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 135 places, split between two routes: Route 1 (non-academic) fills 25% — 34 places; Route 2 (academic) fills 75% — 101 places.
  2. Route 1 (no SEAG assessment required), in order: a brother who is a current or past pupil → a parent on the permanent staff or Board of Governors → a parent or grandparent who is a past pupil → a boy from a listed feeder primary → the eldest boy of the family eligible to transfer.
  3. Route 2: boys are admitted in rank order of combined Standardised Age Score (TSAS), highest first. A boy not selected via Route 1 is automatically considered at Route 2 if he sat the SEAG assessment.
A quarter of places (34) are filled by non-academic criteria — sibling, past-pupil family, feeder primary — with no test required. The remaining three-quarters (101) go on SEAG score rank. Where a boy sits depends on which route he qualifies under.

Loreto Grammar School, OmaghOmagh · Catholic girls’ grammar · Pattern: Partial academic pathway

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 125 places, split roughly half and half between two routes (62/63, alternating year to year). Route 1 (academic) is considered first; Route 2 (non-academic) fills the rest.
  2. Route 1 – Academic: places allocated on rank order of Total Standardised Age Score (TSAS), highest first.
  3. Route 2 – Non-academic: remaining applicants ranked by criteria in order: Loreto named as first preference → a child of the family currently enrolled → the first child of the family eligible to apply → date of birth (eldest or youngest first, alternating each year), then random selection.
  4. A voluntary subscription (currently £70 per student, with family concessions) is requested.
Only about half the intake (up to 62) is selected on SEAG score; the other half (at least 63) is filled by non-academic criteria — first preference, sibling, first child of the family. The academic/non-academic split alternates 62/63 each year, so the exact number selected on score changes annually.

  2. Within an oversubscribed Band the sub-criteria apply in order: a sibling currently enrolled or joining in the coming year → the eldest child of the family → then surname and date-of-birth tie-breaks.
  3. A parental contribution of £100 per child is requested for 2026-27.
Band comes first — the exact score within a Band is not used. Within a Band, a sibling link then the eldest-child criterion decide, ending with surname and age. Check the definitions before assuming one applies.

  1. 130 places. Pupils are admitted by SEAG Band: all Band 1 applicants before any Band 2, and so on, until places are filled.

Strabane AcademyStrabane · controlled co-educational (partial selection) · Pattern: Partial academic pathway

School-published September 2026 entry

  1. 110 places, filled by two routes. Route 1 (academic) admits 50% — 55 pupils — in strict rank order of SEAG Total Standardised Age Score (TSAS), highest first. Route 2 fills the remaining places on a non-academic, all-ability basis.
  2. Within Route 1, where pupils tie on the same score for the last academic place, a surname A–Z order is used.
  3. As a controlled school, no capital fee is charged.
Strabane Academy is an all-ability school that reserves half its intake (55 of 110) for academic selection by SEAG score. The other half is admitted without the assessment — so sitting SEAG is only one of two routes in.

What to do at each stage

Before registration (P5–P6)

  • Visit open days — most run in January.
  • Read each school’s current admissions criteria, not just its results.
  • Note which pattern each school uses (score rank, Band priority, partial pathway).

Registration (18 May – 18 Sep 2026)

  • Register on seagni.co.uk (£20; waived with Free School Meals entitlement evidence).
  • Choose an assessment centre — any member school; it does not affect admissions.
  • If your child may need access arrangements, apply before the deadline.

Assessment (14 & 21 Nov 2026)

  • Two identical-format papers; both count.
  • If illness strikes on the day, see a GP promptly — Special Circumstances claims need dated medical evidence.
  • Practice little and often; the papers follow the KS2 curriculum.

Outcomes (23 Jan 2027)

  • Download the Statement of Outcomes: Band, TSAS, two SAS scores, percentile.
  • Re-marks: 25 Jan – 3 Feb 2027, £20 per paper, refunded if the TSAS changes.
  • Check how each school on your list uses the result (see the evidence cards on this page).

EA application (early 2027)

  • Apply through the EA’s online portal — dates published by the Education Authority.
  • List at least four schools and include at least one non-grammar — no first preference is guaranteed.
  • Upload everything: the SEAG outcome, and any SC/SP forms with evidence. Schools may only consider what is attached.

If it doesn’t go to plan

  • Waiting lists exist at most schools — ask to stay on them.
  • Placement appeals run through the EA.
  • The assessment is one measure, taken on two mornings. Waiting lists, appeals and non-grammar pathways all remain open after results.

Glossary of SEAG terms

Band (1–6)

The headline outcome on the Statement of Outcomes. Band 1 is highest. SEAG states that every Band 1 pupil has a cohort percentile of 60 or higher.

TSAS — Total Standardised Age Score

The English/Gaeilge SAS plus the Maths SAS, standardised for age, number of correct answers and paper difficulty. Schools using rank order use this number.

SAS — Standardised Age Score

The standardised score for one subject section (English/Gaeilge, or Maths).

Cohort percentile

How a pupil scored relative to everyone who sat the assessment that year.

Pool

Used by some rank-order schools: a group of similar scores near the last place, from which final places are chosen using sub-criteria rather than score.

Tie-break / sub-criteria

Non-academic criteria (sibling, eldest child, feeder primary, Free School Meals entitlement, random selection) that decide between children the score or Band cannot separate.

Special Circumstances (SC)

A claim that illness or another problem affected performance on assessment day. Requires independent, dated evidence — usually medical — plus school test records.

Special Provisions (SP)

For children who could not sit the assessment (or sat only one paper), or who moved from outside Northern Ireland. The school estimates an outcome from evidence.

Oversubscription

More applications than places. Only then are admissions criteria fully applied — some schools have not been oversubscribed for years.

SPiMS

Specialist Provision in Mainstream School. Some schools’ admission totals include these placements, which is why “admitted” can exceed “places”.

Re-mark

A request for SEAG to hand-mark papers again (25 Jan – 3 Feb 2027; £20 per paper, refunded if the TSAS changes).

EA Transfer Application

The Education Authority’s online application where parents rank school preferences and upload the SEAG outcome and any SC/SP evidence.

About this page

Compiled by NI Tutoring School from published admissions documents. For each school we record the admissions number, how places are allocated, the tie-break order and three years of application figures — quoting the school’s own documents and linking to each source so you can check it.

We classify schools into four patterns by the order their criteria are applied; that classification is ours. Figures marked Official come from SEAG, the Education Authority or the Department of Education; School-published figures come from a school’s own criteria or oversubscription statement. We don’t publish parent-reported scores, forum data or converted AQE/GL results.

Last full review: 8 July 2026. Criteria are re-checked after schools publish each December and after outcome statements each spring. Spot an error? Tell us and we’ll fix it.

SEAG preparation from NI Tutoring School

The SEAG Hub gives P6–P7 pupils structured daily preparation. Free practice papers and worksheets are also available to every family.

This guide is research support for parents, not advice, and it makes no predictions about admission. Admission decisions are made only by each school’s Board of Governors applying its published criteria for the relevant year. Historical figures can include appeals and special cases and may not repeat. Always read the school’s current criteria and contact the school with criteria-specific questions.
