What the M8 exam covers

The M8 completion test is the final Higher Tier paper. It covers M5, M6, M7 and M8 topics, and assumes knowledge from the earlier units M1, M2, M3 and M4. Because it tests this wider content, pupils should revise M5, M6 and M7 alongside M8.

How the M8 exam works

The M8 exam is the Higher Tier Completion Test (grades A, B, C* and C, with an allowable grade D). It is sat as two written papers in one session and combines with one modular test (M1–M4) for your final grade — the recommended pairing is M4 + M8. Raw mark boundaries change slightly each year.

Exam structure

  • Paper 1: No calculator, 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Paper 2: Calculator, 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Completion test — worth 55% of your final GCSE Maths grade

What does the CCEA M8 exam cover?

M8 is the final Higher Tier Completion Test. It covers M5, M6, M7 and M8 topics and assumes the earlier M1–M4 content, so it is worth revising M5–M7 as well as M8.

What grades can M8 award?

The M8 Completion Test targets grades A, B, C* and C, with an allowable grade D. Your final GCSE grade comes from combining your modular test (M4) with this completion test (M8).

You sit two papers in one session: Paper 1 (no calculator) then Paper 2 (with a calculator), each lasting 1 hour 15 minutes.

How does M8 fit with M4?

M8 pairs with the M4 modular test to make up the full Higher Tier GCSE — the M4 module is worth 45% and the M8 completion test 55%.

What is in the free revision booklet?

The M6–M8 booklet brings together revision material for the Higher Tier completion tests. Pop in your email and we will send it straight over.

How do I get an A*?

The A* is only available on the Higher Tier, and you earn it by sitting both the M4 module test and the M8 completion test — it is awarded at qualification level from your combined marks. It is the one grade whose raw mark boundary shifts noticeably from series to series, but it is usually around 395–400 marks in total.
