What the M5 exam covers
M5 is a Foundation Tier completion test. It targets grades D, E, F and G, covers the M5 content and assumes knowledge from M1. M5 combines with the M1 module test to make up the full Foundation GCSE. Note that the M1 + M5 route tops out around a grade D — students aiming for a grade C usually pair M1 with the M6 completion test instead.
How the M5 exam works
The M5 completion test is sat as two written papers: Paper 1 (no calculator) and Paper 2 (with a calculator), each lasting 1 hour. Together they are worth 55% of the GCSE, with the M1 module test making up the other 45%. Raw mark boundaries change slightly each year.
Exam structure
- Paper 1: No calculator, 1 hour
- Paper 2: Calculator, 1 hour
- Completion test — worth 55% of your final GCSE Maths grade
