What the M1 module test covers

M1 is the first Foundation Tier module test. It targets grades D, E, F and G and covers the core Foundation content — number, algebra, geometry and measures, and handling data. M1 combines with a completion test to make up the full GCSE: the two Foundation completion tests are M5 and M6, and if you are aiming for a grade C, pairing M1 with M6 is a common route.

How the M1 module test works

The M1 module test is a single written paper, sat with a calculator, lasting 1 hour 45 minutes. It is worth 45% of the GCSE, and a Foundation completion test (M5 or M6) makes up the other 55%. Raw mark boundaries change slightly each year.

Exam structure

  • Single written paper — 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Calculator allowed throughout
  • Module test — worth 45% of your final GCSE Maths grade

M1 frequently asked questions

What does the M1 module test cover?

M1 is the first Foundation Tier module test. It targets grades D, E, F and G and covers the core Foundation content — number, algebra, geometry and measures, and handling data. M1 combines with a completion test to make up the full GCSE: the two Foundation completion tests are M5 and M6, and if you are aiming for a grade C, pairing M1 with M6 is a common route.

What grade can M1 lead to?

M1 targets grades D, E, F and G as a module test. Your overall GCSE grade comes from M1 plus a completion test, and a grade C needs 240 UMS in total. A strong M1 result — a high D, around 100 UMS — keeps a grade C well within reach, especially when paired with the M6 completion test.

Is a calculator allowed in M1?

Yes — the M1 module test is sat with a calculator throughout. (The completion test you take alongside it has one non-calculator paper.)

How does M1 fit with the completion tests?

M1 is worth 45% of the GCSE and a Foundation completion test (M5 or M6) the other 55%. If you are targeting a grade C, M1 paired with M6 is a common combination — a total of 240 UMS gives a grade C overall.

Is there an M1 practice paper?

Not yet — but the revision mats above cover the full M1 content. For exam-style practice, our tutors can help.
